- I guess that's kinda what it sounded like, but it's not what I meant. I meant
- the hassle of having to obtain your raw footage *twice* before any editing
- decisions ahve been made. It's more of a principle thing, I guess. There's
- really no reason (other than cost) that a standard for capturing raw video to
- a hard disk recorder hasn't been attempted. Everybody has their scheme -
- Avid, Media 100, NewTek's VTASC, etc... But all of these (except for the
- future Flyer box) still rely heavily on what tape format you can originally
- capture to.
-
- As a small "video guy", I might be able to afford the Flyer and the computer
- equipment that is necessary to build a nice little NL system. But, BetaSP
- stuff is way out of my price range, so I'm limited to either Hi8 or SVHS
- quality to start with unless I want to bring a computer setup to a shoot.
- Even then it's hard to juggle the controls on the Flyer as opposed to just
- letting tape roll. However, a truly portable DDR could greatly increase the
- qualtiy of my final output simply because I'm not limited by the quality of my
- original "capture" gear (ie video camera and deck). Hell, I could still
- output to BetaSP without ever owning or renting any BeatSP gear. All I'd need
- is a friend or a service bureau where I could hook up my Flyer to a record
- deck and play back the edited piece.
-
- So no, I never meant to say that a old fashioned tape setup was better
- quality-wise. It just made more sense to take your capture medium and edit
- it directly to your output medium.
